What is a bedside cot?
A bedside crib, also referred as a bassinet or co-sleeper is a baby cot that is attached to an adult bed. This allows your baby to sleep with you in a safe environment. This is a type of co-sleeping in a safe manner that does not increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) similar to bedsharing and can help you build a bond with your new arrival.
These cots often have a side that can be raised, so you can easily reach your infant at night to feed and comforting. This is especially helpful for mothers recovering from a c section. Many of them are portable or foldable which means you can use them to travel or as an interim solution for infants who aren't ready to be able to transition into a full-sized crib.
Look for a crib with a breathable mattress, and a protective cover that will protect your baby from stains. You might also want to purchase some baby-safe accessories like an infant blanket or a teether.
If you're looking for a more long-term alternative, some cribs are equipped with conversion kits that let you turn them into a cot, or a toddler bed at the time of need. This can extend their lifespan and make the transition a lot easier. Some come with a removable section at the top that can be converted into the bassinet. Other models can be used with either an adult bed that is standard or a high-rise one. This is a great option for families that are planning on frequent travel or switching between bedrooms throughout the night. You should also think about the size of your room to ensure you can fit the crib in comfortably. Many cribs come with an riser that can be used to create an inclined position for infants who suffer from reflux.
